Categories of Competition
There are five categories involved in the selection process: Scholastics (20%), Interview (25%), Talent (20%), Fitness (15%), and Self-Expression (15%).
Scholastics (20%)
A panel of local college admissions officers reviews and rates each contestant's academic record including grades, scholastic test scores, and college entrance examinations.
Interview (25%)
The selection panel has a ten-minute interview with each contestant. Here are some of the things they will be looking for:
Perception: depth of knowledge; ability to think and reason.
Personality: self assurance, manners, sincerity, naturalness, spontaneity, attention, and warmth.
Sense of Values: goals in life, areas of interest and concern, family, civic, and school activities and interests.
Clarity of Expression: vocabulary, modulation of voice, and ease of presentation.
Knowledge: awareness of the world around her, and interest in current events.
Human Relations: ability to communicate with a variety of people, consideration of others, and a cooperative and sportsmanlike attitude.
Accomplishments: community service and contributions to school, clubs, and civic activities.
Talent (25%)
Each contestant presents a performing talent she chooses and is limited to a 90 second performance. The panel bases its judgment on originality, technical ability, appropriateness of selection, costume and stage presence.
Fitness (15%)
Judges evaluate a contestant's overall physical stamina, coordination, agility, and flexibility during a choreographed group aerobic routine. Each contestant has an individual spotlight during the routine.
Self-Expression (15%)
Judges evaluate a contestant's grace, poise, demeanor, carriage and posture, and public speaking ability.
